Sign up for these classes at least two weeks
in advance to ensure a seat
(Especially for "parents’ night out" classes,
those should fill quickly). Courses are priced
per person, discounts available to members of
the same family or to pre-organized groups.
1. The Savvy Traveler I – A crash course in
etiquette
Planning a trip overseas? This 3-hour
packet is for you. Practical info you’ll need
before you travel. Learn about the culture, what
is acceptable, what is not. What to do before
you get on the train or a bus, when you arrive
at a hotel, when you enter a local national’s
home or a place of worship. How to shop, order
food, tip and other essential things you need to
know before you go. Let us take the fear of
embarrassment out of your trip.
Cost: $100/person
2. The Savvy Traveler II – A survival kit: This
3-hour course will include a brief introduction
to the sound system and will provide a kit
consisting of a series of basic essential
survival phrases with a phonetic approximation.
The kit will cover topics such as:
- Greetings and other social niceties
- A “Food Request List” along with “Menu Reader”
for Latin-based alphabets. (Not available for
example in Arabic, Russian or Chinese and
Japanese given the different font).
- Numbers
- Getting places in a taxi
- Simple communications strategies
- Emergencies
Cost: $100/person. Take both Savvy travelers
courses for $175 and save $25.
3. Food for thought – A mini culinary delight!
Want to know more about the culinary culture of
a certain country? Our 3-hour course introduces
you to foods from your favorite country. How to
order, what to order, and when? Cappuccino,
after dinner in Italy? Expecting ice in your water? How about free
refills? How do I pronounce this dish? I just
ordered what?
Learn a lot about your culinary experience
before you get there. You will enjoy it more and
avoid bad surprises. Cost: $ 75. Offered once a
month, call for details. Minimum 2 - Max 10
students
4. Language for the Professions: We provide
custom-tailored courses to address your specific
linguistic needs. We currently can offer:
- Arabic, Farsi and Pashto/Dari for the military
- Spanish for the Health Care Providers
- Spanish for the Construction Industry
Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese and
Russian Professional Development Workshops for
K–12 foreign language teachers - Classes are
offered in conjunction with UCCS’ College of
Education. (Spring 2008).
Rates for all above courses depend on length and
number of students.
5. Parents’ night out: Sign up for the
opportunity to leave your child of age 6-12 for
two hours once a month while you enjoy an
evening out on the town. Not only will you not
have to worry about getting a sitter, but they
will learn a few words and sentences in a
supervised setting while having fun. They won't
even realize they are learning and will dazzle
you when they point out the color and the
clothes you are wearing in Chinese, Japanese,
French or Spanish. A new language and fun theme
every month. First Friday of the month, 6 - 8PM
Cost: $ 15, Min 4 – Max 8 children per session.
6. Pronunciation plus: OK. So you have mastered
the day to day conversation but feel that you
could use more guidance on the proper
pronunciation of the words you already know. Let
our native instructors help you get it right by
reviewing and correcting some common mistakes
people tend to make. Are you absolutely sure you
know the correct pronunciation of "bruschetta",
"blanc" or "grazie"? Get those pesky masculine
vs. feminine ending right.
Cost: $30 per person per 1.5 hour session.
Minimum 3 - Max 6 students per session.
7. Spontaneous Conversation Tables Come join us for spontaneous, unstructured,
brown bag, lunchtime conversation. Languages
include Spanish, French, Italian and German.
Sessions are from noon until 1 pm. Just show up,
the fee is $5 per session. Ample free parking
available!
8. Immersion Days: Practice your
favorite language during our immersion days.
This course is designed to help intermediate and
advanced students freshen up grammar and
conversational skills through myriad activities.
Potluck lunch and fun-filled company! Languages
available include Spanish, French, Italian,
German, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Chinese.
On Saturdays, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Cost
$65 per student, Min 3, Max 8 students.
